ndia's maternal mortality ratio (MMR) has significantly improved, dropping to 88 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2020-22 and 80 in 2023. Despite this progress, ~19,000–22,500 women died due to preventable pregnancy/childbirth causes in 2023. Key causes include hemorrhage, infection, and hypertension, with higher risks in northern/eastern states.

Key Findings on Maternal Mortality in India

Declining Rates: The MMR fell from 130 (2014-16) to 97 (2018-20) and further to 88 (2020-22).

Top Causes: The leading causes of death are obstetric hemorrhage (47%), infections (12%), and hypertensive disorders (7%).

Regional Disparities: Higher mortality is concentrated in states like Assam, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. Southern states (Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu) have achieved the SDG target of <70 MMR.

Global Standing: India accounted for the second-highest number of maternal deaths globally in 2023, with 52 women dying daily.

Demographics: Most deaths occurred among women aged 20–29 years.
